Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction: Kenyon BajusJuxtapoz // Tuesday, 20 Oct 2009
Kenyon Bajus’ artwork can be a little provocative. Shocking, even. But there’s not doubt that Bajus infuses his work with witty social and political commentary- delivered in a punchy drawing or image. Something is telling us we need more of Bajus’ no-holds-barred attitude around.
Good thing eight of his pieces are available as a collection as part of our Big Payback Art Auction.
“I used to spend study halls in high school drawing cocks in other people’s history books. They would open the book in class and there would be a picture of Ghandi with a monster cock spurting in someone else’s face on the opposite page, or Hitler’s cock coming out of his pants and into his own mouth. I would draw the sperm around the mouth, dripping from the eyes-all the details- I left no page untouched. I enjoyed watching the person’s reaction when he opened the book. But I think the best part was watching the reactions of other observers. Some thought it was funny, but most were appalled, and the graphics would embarrass the kid.
“Although the content of my work has evolved, I still enjoy provoking my audience and watching them divide based on their reactions. Defining this ambiguous space between funny and offensive and exploring its boundaries has become my objective.”
