New Image Art Gallery is pleased to present “Here Comes Purple,” a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Megan Whitmarsh.
In her third solo with New Image Art, Whitmarsh will exhibit sculpture, wall pieces and giant fabric collage.
Working primarily in textiles, her re-fabrication of cultural and personal ephemera results in a rueful yet bold kind of Pop art.
Whitmarsh seeks to make her process seen in the work itself. A process that views failure and success as coexistent. Her work acknowledges the repetitiveness of culture yet still finds a compulsion to create, to be original, and to seek meaning; even if this meaning is arbitrary, personal or constantly shifting. The work is both a window opening onto these questions and evidence of her compulsions.
Whitmarsh describes her work as, “an organizing of cultural and personal ephemera which is my reckoning of the overwhelming yet compelling aspects of the universe. I want to make “new” things, which admit their history. New to myself and new to the world if possible.”
Following are a few images from the opening reception.
