Hell’s Belles Car Club 4th Annual Pinewood Derby & Art Auction

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, 29 Sep 2009

Classic car fans, artists of all kinds, kids, and the just plain curious showed up in full force to check out the races of small cars, most created from a rectangular block of pine, on a track set up in White Walls Gallery. Forty racecars, created by a wide variety of participants ranging from kindergarteners, professional sculptors, video game artists, and grandmas, to painters, electricians, and car customizers, battled it out on the racetrack for a shot at a trophy. For those who wanted to make a car but didn’t want to stick to the size limits of racecars, there was the Show Car category that attracted an amazing range of designs.

After the excitement of the official race, when all was said and done, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-place trophy winners all turned out to be little girls, ranging in age from 7 to 10 years old. The Belles also awarded medals to some outstanding cars based on their design and detail in categories like Fast & Furious, Down & Derby, and Best in Show.

Consisting of donations from a wide range of Bay Area artists, the Derby Art Auction featured a strong show of work related to classic car culture—mostly hot rods, pinups, and tattoos. Prints, paintings, drawings, and photographs dominated the show, but a real standout was a gorgeously painted vintage Ford hood painted and donated by artist Amandalynn. Participating artists included Shawn Barber, Brandon Bird, Clare Judith Bowers, Ben Collison, Joanna Crawshaw, Dave Crosland, Carlos DaSilva, Andrea DeHart, Randy Dodson, Craig Travis Harris, Jeff Hibben, Gentleman Jonny, Big Al Lopez, Michael Murphy, Jeremy Natividad, Jamie O'Keefe, Isabel Samaras, Nicole Steen, Jeff Stevens, Bryn Taylor, Sherwin Viray, Jason Vivona, Jamie Watson, Jay Watson, and Brian Bounds, along with a donation of prints and a book from Juxtapoz Magazine.

The Hell’s Belles and the Galleries are proud to be able to donate more than $2500 to the Bay Area Women’s & Children’s Center as a result of the Derby. The Belles would also like to thank Justin Giarla, Leigh Cooper, Libby Nicholau, and the rest of the crew at White Walls and the Shooting Gallery for all their help with another successful event!
