Hair Drawings and Installations by HONG CHUN ZHANGJuxtapoz // Saturday, 28 Apr 2012
A very interesting body of work to come across on a Saturday morning. China-born, Kansas-based artist Hong Chun Zhang has a fascination with hair, whether large format charcoal drawings of hair that extend to the floors of a gallery, or her Hairy Object series that puts hair in absurd situations, the work is both well-rendered and fascinating. Some people feel repulsed by a clump of hair, and Zhang embraces it.
As she writes about her Hairy Object series, " The idea for this series is about humor, beauty and repulsion. To me, long hair not only looks beautiful, but sometimes it can be very repulsive in particular settings such as hair in the hamburger, egg, wineglass, cigarette, toothpaste and sink. I combine hair and every day objects to evoke different feelings and emotions through a surrealistic approach."
