FAB 5 FREDDY Inaugural Artist-In-Residence at Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas

Juxtapoz // Monday, 27 Dec 2010

We wrote last month about RETNA painting at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, and now the hotel has brought in legendary NYC artist, filmmaker, and hip-hop pioneer Fab Five Freddy to be the first artist-in-residence at the hotel's P3 Studio. Fab's new body of work is a series of photographs of celebrated boxers and anonymous show girls are enlarged, digitally altered and printed on canvas, then adorned with Swarovski crystals, artfully placed to make the works pop.

Freddy, born Fred Brathwaite, says of the new work, titled Crystal Punch: These pieces are about light and the movement of the viewer, part of a narrative set on a Kabuki like stage where these boxing gladiators are newly illuminated, a reflection of the gloss on their lifestyle and sport.  And the crystals add glow and power to these iconic women, set on the same stage.”

As you probably know, Fab Five Freddy was a producer and star in the cult film, Wild Style, was a host for the ground breaking MTV show, YO! MTV Raps, and has produced and directed for film and television and graffiti works. He is, simply a living legend, and the fact that the Cosmopolitan got Freddy to be the first artist in residence is an interesting, worthy inaugural choice for their program.

More details on this artist-in-residence program as we learn them.

The residency program is designed to foster a direct exchange between visitor and artist. As artists occupy the space for up to two months each, developing work inspired by the sights and sounds of Las Vegas, guests will be able to interact with the artist, see the work, and follow its development. Art Production Fund (APF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, reaching new audiences and expanding awareness through contemporary art.
