Jennifer Steinkamp is "an installation artist who works with video and new media in order to explore ideas about architectural space, motion, and perception" (as she puts it herself on her website). I saw her recent installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego at their Downtown location. The installation was captivating as the video projections seamlessly blended with the space adding depth and movement to the very spacious, challenging room. Steinkamp took the simple gesture of floating flowers and created a layered and intricate projection that transformed the walls of the space into a floating abyss.
Her work has been exhibited widely and incorporated into numerous public collections including LACMA, MOCA, and Amorepacific Musuem of Art, South Korea. Here we give you an overview of some of her installations from the last year or so (including the installation at MCASD that I elaborated upon). —Max Karnig
