Drawings by James UlmerJuxtapoz // Friday, 22 Jun 2012
Repetition, variation in detail, and simple forms are some of the charming qualities that draw you into these select drawings by James Ulmer. Each work reinvents simple characters or gestures forming patterns that span the entire page. The quantity of the wonky marks reveals the individuality of each stroke, as well as the obsessive compulsion to recreate each form over and over. Titles like Many Faces, Soccer Players, and Lots of Lots all suggest the quantity within the drawings: the quantity of strokes, which are visible, the quantity of characters, which are apparent, and the quantity of variations, which reveals the artist's hand and imagination. Basic emphasis on a repetitive gesture is something that can continually evolve and always possesses a certain appeal, as these drawings appeal to us.
