CALL FOR ENTRIES: TROPFEST SHORT FILM FESTIVALJuxtapoz // Friday, 06 Apr 2012
ENROLLMENT OPEN, ENTER TO WIN $20,000
The world’s largest short film festival, TropFest 2012, is turning 20 and celebrating by bringing the festival to New York’s Bryant Park on June 23. So Tropfest invites filmmakers of all backgrounds and levels of experience to get out and create short films for submission—plus the chance to win $20,000.
Films must be no longer than 7 minutes, must be premieres—and can be about anything. There are no budget restrictions for Tropfest, since films are judged more for the strength of the idea than for "production value." (Many of the best films cost a few dollars and are shot on mobile phones, but 35mm works too.) Films must include the annual Tropfest Signature Item (“TSI”), which is "BAGEL," which you can include anyway you want. Deadline for entries is MAY 10. Click below for details on submission guidelines via TropFest's website.
Finalists will screen at the Tropfest NY main event on June 23. All finalists will be receive $500 for being selected, and the overall winner will be awarded a Grand Prize of $20,000, a trip to Los Angeles for a series of meetings with film executives, agents and others, as well as a chance for your film to be screened multiple times nationally on TropFest's official broadcast partner, Starz Cinema.
An industry and celebrity panel will judge the Finalists live before thousands of independent film-lovers, under the stars at Bryant Park. TropFest's US official Ambassadors include Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush, Anthony LaPaglia, and Charles Randolph. Just a few minutes after the last film screens, the panel will announce one overall winner as well as present awards for Best Actor and Best Actress.
Tropfest was established to encourage production, not just exhibition. It's not just about "showing" films—but making them, and getting better at making them. Even after Tropfest NY ends, they provide you the opportunity to showcase your work to as wide a global audience as possible, not only with the exciting premiere your film will receive if selected, but also by utilizing a variety of distribution outlets following the festival, including Starz.
