Back Talk with Sarah JoncasJuxtapoz // Monday, 30 Aug 2010
One reason you make art:
It gives me direction and keeps me relatively happy. Though, it’s always been there too – can’t really imagine my life without it.
The last good movie you saw:
Something you’ve always wanted to do, but have yet to:
Travel over seas. I’d like to see Japan. It’ll happen!
Favorite country or city visited:
I haven’t seen enough yet… Canada will always be my home though, so in that sense it tops any country for me.
A few words that sum up your philosophy on life:
All you need is love… And blueberry turnovers (can’t forget those!).
Something you want the world to know about you:
I have the best mom in the world. Don’t even argue it.
Something that annoys or frustrates you about people:
When someone complains constantly about the same thing, but seems to not want to do anything about it... And when people blame others for their mistakes.
Something that concerns you:
Poor parenting. Don’t have kids if you know you shouldn’t.
Artists you admire:
Joe Sorren, Aron Wiesenfeld, Viner, Lori Earley, Lisa Yuskavage, John Currin, Frida Kahlo, Edward Hopper, Remedios Varo, Ralph Steadman etc.
“And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.”
“Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.” -The Tick
The first record or CD you ever bought? The last album you downloaded?
Might have been “Aenima,” by Tool? Not sure, I listened to tape deck and the radio well into my teens. Last I downloaded was “Two Suns”, by Bat for Lashes.
Something you do when you’re procrastinating?
I have a picking habit, almost obsessive compulsive. Do it whenever I’m nervous or stressed.
What is your most defining characteristic?
According to most, I’m overly polite and concerned. Guess it’s the Canadian in me!
What is your greatest fear?
Being left in the middle of the ocean at night with only my imagination and whatever lies below, which would probably be sharks. The combination of being eaten alive while drowning…!
The moment you realized you were an ‘artist’:
When my mom put my drawings up on the fridge… Oh, the glory!
Your greatest quality:
When I’m comfortable and happy enough to show it, I’m quite quirky.
Something you wish you could change or alter about yourself:
I have a hard time dealing with confrontation, whether I’m at fault or someone else is, and will avoid it to the point of pretending everything is hunky dory.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken and was it worth it?
Going to art school with the hope of scholarship money to get me through all 4 years. And it was worth it – mainly because it worked (otherwise I’d be in debt my whole life, ha!). But mostly because I feel like I’ve grown up by moving away from home.
Something you wish you had known five years ago:
I’d rather not have future sight, actually. I mean, it’s good to think of the future when making choices, but your experiences are defining. That said, I wouldn’t go take heroin just to learn it was the wrong choice -- common sense, people.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years of your life?
All I hope is to improve in my painting and be able to self sustain without a part time job.
