Back Talk with Miss MindyJuxtapoz // Monday, 06 Sep 2010
Miss Mindy is one half of a duo dubbed The Art Sisters, the other being her sister (duh), CJ Metzger. A full-loving pair, we sit down Mindy for some Back Talk (and learn about her backyard 'mushroom house') in anticipation of their show Pie in the Sky.
One reason you make art:
Because it is its own language.
The last good movie you saw:
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. I love Terry Gilliam films. Time Bandits was one of my favorite movies of all time when I was a kid.
Something you’ve always wanted to do, but have yet to:
Travel to Ireland and paint with my sweetheart in a sea shanty town, livin’ on love and Guinness.
Favorite country or city visited:
Honestly I can’t name just one! I adored the buildings and history in London, singin’ in the bars when I was a teenager whilst dirty old men bought me beer. Chicago’s fireflies. Edinburgh’s green grass and soot covered castles. And I can’t forget San Francisco, and how it looks like a ‘toy town’ with its street cars and bridges.
A few words that sum up your philosophy on life:
I know it’s simple, and not all witty, but enjoying the little things in life keeps me sane. Turtles, laughing, strawberries, a new hair do. Not taking yourself too seriously reminds you of where you are, who your with, and living in the present.
Something you want the world to know about you:
Hmm... something fun, that my man ‘Ricky Dee’ and I built a mushroom house in our backyard. We’re still savin’ up for the’ Guinness Tap’ that we want to attach to the side of it so you can drink little beers inside, read stories, and draw. Aaaah. Yup, said Guinness twice already in this Back Talk! Oh dear.
Something that annoys or frustrates you about people:
How easy they think it is to be positive. Sometimes I get treated like crap or brushed off because I make the effort to smile or be nice.
Something that concerns you:
Oh gees! No CNN before bedtime. Having nightmares about the world and how messed up parts of it are. Wishing I could do more to help. It makes me ill at times…I inherited sucha large freakin’ empathy gland that it takes over my brain, & it gets hard to “brush it off” at times.
Artists you admire:
Oh lots of ‘em---Dr Suess, Toulouse Lautrec, Jiri Trnka, cartoonist Max Fleischer, Edwin Austin Abbey, my sweetheart Rick O’Brien, grandparents Ralf & Jeanette Johnstone, my sister CJ… and last but not least, My grandmother Mary Ellison Allen who worked as an ink and paint girl at Disney in the 30’s (not to mention she played the best game of ‘Cootie’ around!)
“I look just like the girls next door…if you happen to live next door to an amusement park.” - Dolly Parton
The first record or CD you ever bought?
- The Strawberry Shortcake Disco Album
- The last album you downloaded? Henry Mancini: Pie-in-the-face Polka
Something you do when you’re procrastinating?
I usually watch Miyazaki or old school Betty Boop cartoons. I sometimes clean up my studio/home so I can find things again, or get ‘computer time suckin’ disease!’
What is your most defining characteristic?
I have a flap on my right ear like Dumbo.
What is your greatest fear?
To lose my ‘love’ in every sense of the word.
The moment you realized you were an ‘artist’:
I kinda ‘popped out’ as one. My mom and grandparents were/are all artists, so it’s second nature in our family, like carnies. My sister and I were always making things out of moms ‘bread dough’ recipe: flour, water and salt. It gets hard when you cook it, and then you can paint on it, ahhh I loved that stuff. Honestly, I feel really fortunate to have been brought up in an artist family.
Your greatest quality:
My big ol’ knockers! Ha ha—naw… I guess my smile, I like smiling, my face does that.
Something you wish you could change or alter about yourself:
One minute I’m shy and the next I’m crazy social. I guess it’s just natural ‘moody broad’ stuff, but it does get frustrating when I can’t talk right. Words foul up – bleh bleh blot! I try to just accept and be happy with what mama gave me, but it’s so easy to pick yourself apart sometimes, especially after big art shows, or long animation jobs… you can feel so vulnerable and weird.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken and was it worth it?
Quitting my day jobs. Yes! At first it’s scary, and gets a little tricky, but it always works out as long as I keep making art in all the different ways I do.
Something you wish you had known five years ago?
The friends I know now.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years of your life?
To make the best art I can and travel with it all over the world. To meet new people and inspirations, whether it be lil animals, new artist friends, or a favorite new place out in the world.
