Back Talk with Imminent Disaster

Juxtapoz // Saturday, 27 Feb 2010

With a moniker like Imminent Disaster, you know you’re dealing with something heavy. This Brooklyn-based artist has been wheatpasting the streets for the past four years and now turns her attention to a highly anticipated gallery show at Los Angeles’ Thinkspace gallery.

Her show with Armsrock titled Refuge opens March 12th, 2010 and will show off her latest works, as well as mark the final exhibit for Thinkspace at their Silverlake location before they relocate to Los Angeles’ Culver City district.

How do you feel right now?

Jittery from morning coffee. Toes cold from the winter air. Cheeks slowly warming in a spot of sunshine.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

In Colombia with my Chilean friends, trekking up the side of a mountain until we are above the clouds.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

I'd move to a farm and learn how to milk goats and grow my own food.

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

Damien Hirst. Or Jeff Koons. Their work is so despicable I wouldn't even punch them. I'll let them bring each other down in a nasty drunken brawl.

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

If that song were an awkward nerd-rock ballad.

At what point were you particularly happy?

Are we happy? Particularly?

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

I should have never joined the cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

What trait do your friends have in common?

They're all sweet-talking pirates that look good in spray painted gold.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

I had to make that decision a few years ago when a fire got out of control in my friend's apartment. I made the logical choice... my backpack, with all my everyday essentials. The romantic decision is hard to make in that second.

Greatest love of your life?

Tsk tsk. A girl has to keep some secrets close.

What is your favorite vice?

Smoking hand rolled cigarettes. I love the ritual. I love the taste. I love looking out my window and watching the smoke wind upwards.

When you blow out the birthday candles, what do you wish for?

An endless year of sweet kisses.

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

Katherine Hepburn. In a pencil dress. At the Stork in NYC.

Do you ever lie?

If I said no I would be lying.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

I'm not sure I understand the intent, or have fixed intentions. I just make what I'm compelled to make. I think anyone who really gives time to look at it has the possibility of coming to a greater understanding, but I'm not sure how many people really look.

What virtue can you do without?

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

Only when there's kids around, and then I stop talking because I'm afraid I'm going to fuck up.

What has been your proudest moment?

Being rejected from every artist grant I applied for this year.

What would you like to be remembered for?

Being a woman of beauty, wit and talent.

How would you prefer to die?

Fast and young.
