Back Talk with Dabs Myla

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, 24 Nov 2009

Dabs is a prolific illustrator and graffiti artist who spent his teenage years growing up in Melbourne in the Early ‘90s. The graffiti scene influenced him greatly in his style and technique. These days Dabs’ characters come to life in more contextualized environments than ever before, whether they are painted on walls in the streets, or on canvases for a gallery setting.

Myla was also raised in Melbourne where she was obsessed with detailed painting and drawing from an early age. Throughout her life Myla has continued to develop her artistic ways, and now concentrates on detailed cities and landscapes. Three years ago, along with Dabs, they combined forces to solely collaborate on their works together.

Dabs Myla currently live in Hollywood, Los Angeles, spending everyday working on artworks, painting walls and being influenced by the wonders of their new city.

How do you feel right now?

DABS: Totally content!!..couldn't be happier with life than I am right now..I love this city....I love my job....and I love my business partner!

MYLA: Same!!

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

MYLA: If it was just for one day..then I would probably want to be back in Melbourne. Go see our family and friends, meet our new niece...

DABS: ....and stop at a bakery and get a meat pie and a chocolate BIG M!!

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

DABS: I  honestly have no idea! We talk about that sometimes....because we really don't  know know how to do anything else apart from this! Maybe we could work on a magic routine! Neither of us know anything about magic..but i think we would have alot of fun doing it! And MYLA would make a pretty amazing magicians assistant I think!
If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

MYLA: I don't think I would like to punch anyone...

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

DABS: I dont think so...if it was it would be a pretty awkward, sloppy shitty song! (No disrespect Lauren Harris from Heathmont Primary School 5a!)

MYLA: I don't really remember it?..but I think our first kiss was worthy of a song!

At what point were you particularly happy?

DABS: Seriously..Every day I'm about as happy as I could be.

MYLA: Me too!!

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

MYLA: Hmmm...I wish I paid more attention to my first kiss. I never really thought someone would be asking me about it 16 years down the track.

What trait do your friends have in common?

MYLA: Super awesomeness!!

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

MYLA: Dabsies hand and hope he grabs something important...

Greatest love of your life?

DABS & MYLA: Please...come on!..thats to obvious to even bother answering!
What is your favorite vice?

MYLA: Horoscopes and tootsie roll pops.

DABS: Super trashy movies!

When you blow out the birthday candles, what do you wish for?

DABS: Something like this!!!

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

DABS: GOB from Arrested Development...just to be in a magicians mind.

MYLA: Liz Lemon....I would be hilarious!
Do you ever lie?

DABS: Well...if i wouldnt really know if this answer was the truth now would you?

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

DABS: I would hope so...its not too hard to follow! Its mostly just about love and fun! There's definately elements in each painting that are more like a private joke between the two of us, but over all i think people are seeing what the vibe is about.

What virtue can you do without?

MYLA: I need them all.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

DABS: No..i have a real problem with it. I never notice anymore..and I love a good cussin'!! Especially the C bomb! Myla is always on my back about it!

MYLA: Yeah I don't like it when he says that...but lately I haven't really noticed all the times that he says it...I'm unfortunately becoming immune to it...

What has been your proudest moment?

MYLA: Falling in love, being engaged  and looking forward to being married next year.

What would you like to be remembered for?

MYLA: Painting tiny buildings, doing graffiti, being a good friend and cooking delicious things!

DABS: The invention of the Television? But I don't think its gonna happen.

How would you prefer to die?

MYLA: As long as we are by each others side  at the time then we couldnt ask for much more.

DABS: Either that...or Bon Jovi steez!!....IN A BLAZE OF GLORY!
