Back Talk with Craig “Skibs” Barker

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009

Craig “Skibs” Barker grew up in Southern California during the early ‘80s in the midst of both the punk rock and surfing culture explosions.  His work captures his laid back surf lifestyle and appreciation for the female form. Check him out.

How do you feel right now?

Like a hundred bucks!

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

Tavarua Island, Fiji…I’d surf Restaurants.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

It puts the lotion in the Epicuren box.
If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

Jenny Saville…cuz she paints like a maniac…and if she fought back I think I might win…might.

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

Not quite a song but a good story…it was the early 80’s…I was just a little punk rock/surfer kid…and one of the preppy “hot chicks” from my junior high got drunk at a party and made out with me in front of all my friends…hero status for weeks!

At what point were you particularly happy?

Yesterday was pretty good.

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

Never seeing The Jam live.
What trait do your friends have in common?

Biting sarcasm.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

The family, the dogs and the Ian Francis painting…wait, that’s 3 things.

Greatest love of your life?

My wife, my model (she’s the one with all the tattoos in my work), and my muse…Kristen.

What is your favorite vice?

Caffeine and Albuterol.
When you blow out the birthday candles, what do you wish for?

Sounds lame…but usually just really good surf.

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

The Dude… Or maybe His Dudeness, or Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Do you ever lie?

Only when totally unnecessary.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

Sometimes… but I like it when they draw their own conclusions.
What virtue can you do without?

Prudence seems kinda useless.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

For’s my favorite form of language.

What has been your proudest moment?

Going back to college in my mid-thirties and finishing my BFA.

What would you like to be remembered for?

My prudence.

How would you prefer to die?

In my sleep after a very long and adventurous life.

Craig “Skibs” Barker's show, “Sight for Sore Eyes” opens at Thinkspace Gallery on Nov. 6
