Back Talk: A Conversation with Brandi MilneJuxtapoz // Wednesday, 01 Aug 2012
On Saturday, August 11, Corey Helford Gallery will open Brandi Milne's newest solo exhibition, Before I Hide Away, in Culver City, California. As Corey Helford Gallery tells us, " With this body of work, Brandi steps into the rarified limelight of fineartists whose work is uniquely hers, a voice unlike any other's."
Where are you living and working right now?
Huntington Beach, CA
Least favorite part of making art? And your favorite part...
My least favorite part of making art is the long, long hours of solitude. And sometimes on the flip side that's my favorite part, but my most favorite part is being able to create a world and a story out of what ever personal challenge or issue I'm dealing with at any given time. I'm thankful for it because I'd go nuts without that outlet.
Favorite medium to work with?
I love love love painting - I use acrylics, but I think I'd have to say that I love pencil more.
Last art show / exhibition you saw:
I haven't been out in a while, can I say that I watch Adventure Time and consider that quite an exhibition of pure talent and humor?
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be?
In my wildest dreams, I would love to work with photographer Tim Walker.
Artist(s) that inspire you?
Lola, Natalia Fabia, Bob Dob, Daniel Peacock, Camille Rose Garcia, Travis Lampe...good people that make wonderful art.
What time of day are you most productive?
Morning into the day.
Currently listening to?
Tool, Pink Floyd and Mastodon. They seriously helped me tune in to each lick and stroke of my paint brush and forget about those long, long hours of solitude during the making of my recent body of work. They're magic.
How do you take your coffee?
I don't take coffee at all, but I take my hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles.
I had a bag of fries and a piece of candy for lunch today. Tonight I will have steak and salad. I eat like a fool, one day I'll grow up.
Last three places you have lived?
I lived in the house I grew up in in Anaheim, CA until I got married and moved to Huntington Beach, CA and that's where I am still. I dream of living in cold, rainy places like Seattle or even England, but I'm afraid I'll never leave CA.
Last time you traveled? To where?
I was lucky to visit New York in January with the owner and a few artists from the Corey Helford Gallery. It was my first trip there and I LOVED IT. It was ice cold and beautiful ~ I'll be revisiting again in October for my show at Cotton Candy Machine and I'm so super looking forward to it.
What website(s) do you visit most often?
I visit fashion blogs like Wildfox and Oracle Fox.
Website you're most ashamed that you visit daily?
Yipes, Forever 21.
A quote that has stuck with you?
"I shall serve no fries before their time" Brad Hamilton
The most trivial thing you know?
High school GPA?
3.0...or somewhere just below that...like a hair off...Ok, I got some Cs, so what.
Least artistic award you've received?
Outstanding Flag. I was in Tall Flags in High School. Oops.
Oddest job you've done to make rent?
Painting and drawing stuff.
DIY, Ask a question we didn't and answer it. What the hell are you doing with your life?
I'm glad you asked. My next solo exhibition opens August 11th at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City as well as October 12th at the Cotton Candy Machine in NY. I will also be releasing my first art book in early 2013.
