Adrian Esparza Reweaves Serape Blankets into Geometric Patterns

Taking Mexican serape blankets, Texas-based artist Adrian Esparza deconstructs and reweaves the threads into beautiful and colorful geometric patterns. Esparza sees the work as an evolving self-portrait. The serape blankets represent a tradition and cultural identity, displaced from its site of origin, and an object he encountered regularly as a Mexican-American raised on the border. The geometric patterns that he creates are also reminiscent of Macramé and other handcrafts from his childhood.

Esparza's work, "Wake and Wonder," will be on display at the Pérez Art Museum Miami through May 2015.
