A Sirtan Death: Fear & Clothing in Libya

Say what you will about Muammar Gaddafi, dead today at the sexy age of 69, that motherfucker could rock himself some magnificent-ass robes. Look at him, all resplendent in rich purple sateen robes. Hard to imagine this majestic tyrant dying in a sewer "like a rat" as the vermin-obsessed media loves to report. Though I must say, the resemblance to TMNT's sensei Splinter in this pic is uncanny.

As with the deaths of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, the reaction of our domestic Cable News Media is comfortingly predictable. MSNBC, Fox, CNN, and the other heavy lemmings of Empire wail “What now? What next? What happened?” in that order, as reporters shove microphones in faces at random and demand “What does his death mean to YOU?” US Diplomats & shills respond with those tried & true mantras from Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt & Tunisia– the subtly racist insinuations that these wacky brown people have an inferior society somehow allergic to REAL democracy, making sure to omit any mention of centuries of European/American interference: It's in the Libyan people's hands now, Gaddafi was only half the battle, please welcome us into your nation with open arms, look at our track record, we'll help you. But only if you help us oppose Iran.

It's been a precipitous fall from the US's good graces for the former Bush regime and McCain friend Gaddafi, but his regime was too wracked by internal turmoil to survive. As with Mubarak in Egypt, a strongman is nothing if sapped of his strength, bulk without muscle turns to flabby deadweight, and the rosiest tinge of American Exceptionalism cannot justify the excesses of a tyrant whose tyranny has gone pear-shaped. Reduced to naught but a rogue & terrorist yet again, Gaddafi ended his days on the run with only those who had everything to lose still in his crumpling corner. And so his run ended in a sewer, where the US & NATO flush all their discarded bullies, and a new Libya emerges, wracked from within and beset on all sides by bullies, meddlers and profiteers. At long last, the Devil You Know is dead.
