Avi Spivak's "Studs & Broads" @ Otha's

Juxtapoz // Friday, February 01, 2013
Believe it or not, there was actually a coffee void in an area of Williamsburg, Brooklyn? Yep, the first JMZ stop (Unless you prefer McDonalds coffee and we aren’t mad at you if you do) has been without anything of quality since the beginning of time and our friends decided to change that. Otha’s was established only a few months ago and tonight, February 1, 2013 they are throwing their first art show entitled “Studs & Broads” with local Brooklyn-based illustrator, Avi Spivak.

The Works of Justin Hopkins, aka RareBit

Music // Friday, February 01, 2013
A great collection of drawings from Los Angeles based Justin Hopkins, who also goes by the name RareBit. As RareBit, Hopkins releases music via Non Projects, and his illustration work is full of fine details and pointillism style. Growing up in Washington, Hopkins says of his work: I like to think of my music as fungus encrusted and in a constant state of growth and decay. In this way I am influenced by the organic, wet, and florally lush environment in which I grew up.

Sandow Birk, featured in our January 2013 issue, just completed two murals with his wife Elyse Pignolet for the new SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco. In typical highly detailed style, Birk and Pignolet created the murals using hand-made, hand-painted ceramic tiles. Birk has a bunch of work in various exhibitions this year, but definitely worth checking out the new center and Birk and Pignolet's mural contributions.
