They say 'How about serving breakfast in bed with hot Kama Sutra toast or why not invite friends over for a lovely brunch with enticing fried eggs? We honor out gingerbread pigs and goats, but now they are finally here, the gingerbread cutters that make the Christmas tree rise and the candles glow.'

Music Videos We Liked in 2012: Grizzly Bear "Yet Again"

In our opinion, the new Grizzly Bear LP, Shields, was one of the best of 2012, and "Yet Again" one of the best tracks on said album. The track just got a wonderful video treatment from director Emily Kai Bock, following an ice skater's serene yet imperfect routine that descends into a bit of chaos and anger. Like the song, well done.

The Grinchiest Time of Year

The Works of Langdon Graves

An artist we enjoyed learning about this year was Langdon Graves. Originally from Virginia, Graves is a Brooklyn based artist, who creates beautiful, ethereal illustration work. Her drawings have a minimal stillness about them, and her simple arrangements are approached in a near new surrealist manner.

Music Videos We Liked in 2012: Bonne 'Prince' Billy "I See A Darkness"

It was odd enough to see that Bonnie Prince Billy rework his 1999 masterpiece, I See A Darkness as an upbeat country folk singalong, but it was even more odd to see Billy's eyes go googly in this seemingly simple video. But director Ben Berman turns what appears to be a classic black and white shoot into a bit of mysterious haunted house of fun loving characters.

What we wrote on July 10, 2012: Perhaps we have a weak stomach, but there is something about these photos that makes our belly turn a bit. First, Belgian photographer Kurt Stallaert's series, Bodybuilder's World, started innocent enough; a family that looked a little too buff for their own good.

Oaksterdam Mural Painted Over

Last week, a mural that pot smokers and even non-tokers appreciated was buffed back to beige. The building, which once housed the Oaklandish University, was recently sold and the new owner decided he did not want to be associated with the Pot College. Recent vandalism to the mural also may have effected the decision, but many people in the community were sad to see it go. It definitely added color and life to the rather colorless downtown area of Oakland.

Grace Molteni defines her illustration work as 'where pretty gets gritty,' and it couldn't hold more true. In her illustrations, emotional excerpts of text are mixed and matched with graphically designed portraits of youth. There is a certain angst that is apparent in her work, scratching it's way out through her traditional and digital media.
