Best of 2012: Double Vision by Ho Ryon Lee

Juxtapoz // Saturday, December 29, 2012
What we wrote on April 1, 2012: Maybe it's our lingering jetlag in London, but these realistic, blurred motion paintings by Ho Ryon Lee are messing with our heads this morning. A little tease, a nice recreation of a dream state from the Seoul, Korea-based artist.

Music Videos We Liked in 2012: Modeselektor + Thom Yorke "This"

Music // Saturday, December 29, 2012
Okay, we all in agreement that puppets and puppeteering is a little creepy? Of course, I'm going by the Thom Yorke / Modeselektor version of puppeteering, and this brilliantly bizarre video from FutureDeluxe and Andrew Jones for the track "This" that was a standout for us in 2012. Not sure if it is the puppet or puppeteer that takes over and goes beyond the call of reality in this one, but aroudn the 3 minute mark, the world takes a turn.

The Conceptual Works of Aili Schmeltz

Juxtapoz // Saturday, December 29, 2012
Los Angeles based conceptual artist Aili Schmeltz recently caught our eye. Her works are a constant process of research and response to natural events and phenomena that captivate and serve as an impetus to weave these seemingly isolated events into a larger contextual tale.

She's Full of Colour: The Works of Julia Mai

Juxtapoz // Saturday, December 29, 2012
We have never been to Iceland, but we can only assume, especially with the artistic output from the island nation, that there is a good bit of creative discourse going on amongst the young people. They have standout bands and artists who call Iceland home, and we are mesmerized by the works of Julia Mai and her She's Full of Colour series. Mistakes and freedoms bring the portraits to life, and we appreciate good linework matched with abstraction.

MOMO in Miami

Street Art // Saturday, December 29, 2012
During the mural madness that is Wynwood Walls, Momo painted this easy-on-the-eyes abstract piece. Simple, non-intrusive, and blends into the environment.

The Illustrations of Bayo

Illustration // Friday, December 28, 2012
'My current body of work depicts the inner debate that confronts the ego as a mediator for the demands of individuality and as a self-energy that keeps fanatical vigilance over its survival. The fundamental quest for turning individuality into a delusional existence. A series of characters immerse in a non-stop battle of energy. Positive against destructive.' Bayo

Over the past year, Juxtapoz and Converse have teamed on a unique project, Wall to Wall, where we invite an artist in a city in North America to create a semi-permanent mural based around the artist's interpretation of the iconic Converse star. Today, we look back on the piece that Brooklyn-based Vizie painted in the Windy City of Chicago, one of the standout, abstract pieces that came from the Wall to Wall project.

What a nice way to wrap up the year. Artist Elliott Arkin, has created a cast marble on oak base sculpture of internationally famous Chinese artist and activist, Ai Weiwei. The sculpture, made in an edition of 100 and standing at 6" tall, is titled 1/1,000,000,000, a nod to China's population.
