Man Builds Mountain Villa on Beijing Apartment Building

Juxtapoz // Thursday, August 15, 2013
The story of a Beijing doctor spending the last 6 years building a mountain villa on the roof of his 26-story apartment building with no permission has been making its rounds on the web recently. We can't even begin to comprehend how he managed to get those materials onto the roof...elevators? The addition covers 1000 square meters of rooftop in artificial rocks, real trees and grass. After residents filed complaints for 6 years about leaks, heavy machinery, and noise, the government finally decided to intervene and give the man a whole 15 days to remove it.

Tyrus Wong "Water to Paper, Paint to Sky" @ Disney Family Museum, SF

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, August 14, 2013
A kite springs from a flat dimension into billowing buoyancy, flight or failure, but always guided by aspiration. Tyrus Wong flew his first kite at age seven in 1917, designed his first in 1978, and at age 102 still has the world on a veritable string. Muralist, illustrator, calligrapher and sketch artist, Wong will be celebrated at the Walt Disney Family Museum show Water to Paper, Paint to Sky. The show opens August 15, 2013. Naturally, I had questions for the man who worked on both Bambi and The Wild Bunch.

Living Walls 2013 - Part 1

Street Art // Wednesday, August 14, 2013
On our first day in Atlanta aka The ATL, Hotlanta or A-Town, we toured around to some of the walls checking out the muralists as they endure the summer heat and lay some paint down. First we got to view some walls by famed-photographer, JR that had been done the week prior before the conference kicked off. After that we caught up with 3ttman as he worked on a massive wall packed full of playful and vibrant colored imagery. Then we saw walls from Inti, Jaz, Know Hope and Roti in collaboration with Jaz. Our night ended at a” mansion party” and in true southern style, it had the largest porch we have had the opportunity to loiter on! Check back tomorrow for more updates!

Thank you Fecal Face, we saw this, too. This is a really slick, beautiful series of photographs that are a collaboration between Bryan Schnelle and fashion photographer Chris Callaway. The result is Vestiges, just some clean shots of models wearing some elaborate masks which make for a nice viewing...

The Work of Nadine Boughton

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, August 14, 2013
Using vintage magazins and materials, Nadine Boughton will scan and compose digital collages. "My intention is to blend the nostalgia for the past with the darkness beneath 'the pleasures of modern living.' I am interested in the portrayal of women and domestic culture; the illusion of security; food as an objecdt of desire and comfort; and the grip of materiality."

Hammer Projects: Maya Hayuk

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, August 14, 2013
One of our favorite artists, Maya Hayuk, will be creating a new site-specific mural on the Lobby Wall of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles for her first one-person US museum exhibition. "Hayuk weaves visual information from her immediate surroundings into her elaborate abstractions, creating an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced painting practices while connecting to the ongoing pursuit of psychedelic experience in visual form." Maya was featured in our special December 2009 Barnstormers issue.
