Surreal Paintings by Till Rabus

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, May 28, 2013
Even as Swiss artist Till Rabus' works are painted in an almost photo-realist style, his subject matter balances between myth and surrealism. Photographs by Lieko Shiga

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, May 28, 2013

His process involves floating the printed image in the darkroom just as it is appearing and before it settles, generating not easily recognizable, but incredibly fantastical and meaningful photographs. As FOAM magazine puts it, Shiga's "belief in the transcendent power of the photograph verges on the religious."

In addition to the bodies' gestural meanings, their twisted forms suggest  the kind of turbulent yet passionate relationship that has the potential to engender just as much profound happiness as it can bitter misery.
