Yusuke Sakai’s “Skin”

Photography // Friday, August 22, 2014
In his series “Skin”, Japanese photographer Yusuke Sakai used his camera to explore the unique surfaces of a variety of zoo animals’ skin. Sakai decided to stray away from the usual full form images taken of the animals and got extremely close to capture full frame images of their skin. Because of the scale and compositions of the images, the depicted skins become an abstracted form of themselves through the unique textures and patterns that are the unnoticed norm for each animal.

Sci-Fi, Fantasy and James McCarthy

Illustration // Friday, August 22, 2014
"I guess it all stems from my childhood" is James McCarthy's banner statement. "I am not interested in cliches like unicorns and fairies and I do not want to overly sentimentalize my work. It is influenced by fantasy and science fiction up to a point, yes, but it is also personal...

Graffiti // Thursday, August 21, 2014
Typically the streets of Santa Fe, New Mexico are rather sleepy in terms of graffiti, but that won’t last long when the Pigs Crew comes creeping around and smacks a spot like this. Huge chrome and black blocks, and if you look closely you can see someone squatting down in between where the letters gap for size reference.

Magdalena Marcinkowska Illustration

Erotica // Thursday, August 21, 2014
Magdalena Marcinkowska is a freelance illustrator based in Krakow, Poland. Her sensual images also double as political commentary on women's portrayal in the media and plastic surgery. We enjoy seeing some politically-conscious artwork in the erotica realm.

Juxtapoz // Thursday, August 21, 2014
Thinkspace is pleased to present After, featuring new works by Stephanie Buer and Mary Iverson. Portland based artist Stephanie Buer explores derelict and abandoned urban spaces in her meticulously detailed oil paintings and charcoal drawings. Looking to the barren architectural vestiges of industry, Buer explores the life of marginalized structures once they’re divested of function and condemned to vacancy and neglect.

Geoff McFetridge Mural @ West LA Courthouse (with help from NIKE SB)

Juxtapoz // Thursday, August 21, 2014
Geoff McFetridge just completed a mural at the historic West LA Courthouse skate spot. The mural is part of a greater project that reopened and repaired the spot, with Nike SB, local government and skaters working together to have it back open to public. Juxtapoz' Sam Graham went and snapped some shots this weekend. Public art, public space, skating... perfect. We asked Geoff to talk about the project, about both the mural and the skate spot itself, and in his own words, this is what he told us.

Music Video: Action Bronson "Easy Rider"

Music // Thursday, August 21, 2014
We have a close Juxta-family connection with Action Bronson, and when we caught a look at his newest video for the track "Easy Rider," a video that pays homage to the 1969 Peter Fonda/Dennis Hopper film, we pretty became convinced that Action is having the most fun in the music industry at the moment. Directed by Tom Gould and coming off the upcoming LP, "Mr Wonderful," ... enjoy.

NECKFACE "Drinking On The Job" @ New Image Art, LA

Juxtapoz // Thursday, August 21, 2014
If there is anything you plan on doing this weekend in Los Angeles, make sure going to the opening of Nasty Neckface's new show, "Drinking on the Job," at New Image Art Gallery on Friday, August 22nd, 2014. If you are going to kick off a Fall season with a new show, you might as well go Neckface, go dirty, go raunchy, go funny, go ironic, and literally go drinking. According to New Image, "Working days and nights, the artist adhered to a strict creative process shrouded in the lighthearted but gloomy atmosphere akin to bars and pubs." There you go.
