Pardee's Picks: Ken Garduno

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 23, 2013
"Amongst the thousands of Instagram accounts overstuffed with puppies hugging piglets, beautiful sunsets in third world countries and Miley Cyrus candids, one account consistently jumps out at me with every post. The owner of this outstanding account is Los Angeles illustrator Ken Garduno. In the daytime, Ken meticulously designs elegant, borderline fine-art illustrations that grace art gallery walls on a regular basis. But at night...

Vibe Israel: Tal Amitai-Lavi, Chelouche Gallery

Illustration // Sunday, December 22, 2013
I was fortunate enough to spend this past week experiencing the visual art scene in Tel Aviv, Israel and to discover the work of Tal Amitai-Lavi, an Israeli artist (born Israel 1969) who shows with Chelouche Gallery for Contemporary Art. As a multidisciplinary artist, Amitai-Lavi's work straddles the boundary line between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional, and is characterized by love of craftsmanship, sensitivity to detail and an exploration of unusual materials (sewing thread, salt, plasticine, etc....

Vibe Israel: Adi Nes

Erotica // Sunday, December 22, 2013
On my recent trip to Israel, I came in contact with the work of Adi Ness, an internationally known Israeli photographer that shows with Sommer Gallery in Tel Aviv. As a gay male, Nes often incorporates Israeli men, soldiers and the essence of masculinity in his work, though claims that the homoerotic element found in his work is never intentional. "It simply happens - it's part of my identity. I don't think I make them erotic; I think that the eros in the pictures is like the eros in culture. It comes out from inside...

Best of 2013: Kohei Yoshiyuki's "The Park"

Photography // Saturday, December 21, 2013
Originally published on April 25th 2013: This morning we take a look at Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki's series of black-and-white photographs from the 1970s. Using a 35mm camera, infrared film, and flash, Kohei documented people who gathered in several of Tokyo's parks at night for romantic rendezvous and the many spectators that lurked in the bushes to watch and sometimes participate. The photos are raw, voyeuristic and uncomfortable...

Pardee's Picks: Retroband Holiday Workshop Visit

Juxtapoz // Saturday, December 21, 2013
The North Pole may indeed house the most famous hand-made toy factory in history. However, with the ever-growing popularity of vinyl toys, customized blanks, resin casts and collectable high end japanese bootlegs, hundreds of one-man toy factories are hiding all around the world. One of these passionate little workshops in particular, RETROBAND is snuggled in a location that no North Pole elf would even survive in: San Antonio, Texas.
