New Book Carvings From Guy Laramée

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, December 24, 2013
Throughout the last year we have posted many different artists who have been using old books as a medium for their art. By carving, slicing, gluing, stacking, and collaging the pages and spines of books, the artists have been creating incredible works of art from otherwise discarded and forgotten about printed materials. One of these artists, Guy Laramée, recently took a 24-volume set of the now discontinued Encyclopedia Britannica and transformed it into a mountain range. The piece, titled Adieu, is inspired by the announcement that the company would cease printing of the book sets.

Vibe Israel: Klone Studio Visit / Alfred Gallery

Illustration // Monday, December 23, 2013
This past week, as Juxtapoz's illustration editor, I was granted a trip out to Israel to explore the rich cultural and creative landscape in and around Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. I came across the two person show Klone and Meshullam put together at Alfred Gallery, and set up some time to chat with the amazingly accommodating artist Klone in his studio in southern Tel Aviv...

Best of 2013: Fulvio di Piazza, May 2013

Vault // Monday, December 23, 2013
All month, we have been going back to our archvies from both the web and our print edition, finding some of our favorite posts and articles from 2013. Today we look back at an article in our print edition from May 2013, where we featured the amazing surreal paintings of Italian artist, Fulvio di Piazza. For the piece, we had fellow Italian painter Nicola Verlato get inside the head of Mr di Piazza, and because of it, the article gets... well, a little heady...

ROA "Paper Trails" @ White Walls, SF

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 23, 2013
In a surprise when we attended Ferris Plock's opening at White Walls in SF a few weeks back, we saw an amazing, immersive installation created by ROA in the backroom of the gallery. Just stepping into the space was an incredible experience, with so many details and pieces to take in from the constantly traveling Belgian artist. From the press release, its states that Paper Trails is based on "a new collection of animals encountered through the artists' profuse and worldwide travels."

Best of 2013: "Back to the Future," Photographs by Irina Werning

Photography // Monday, December 23, 2013
Originally published on May 2, 2013: Buenos Aires-based photographer Irina Werning travelled to 32 countries and shot 250 pictures for her Back to the Future project. "I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… Two years ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future."

The Grand Budapest Hotel: Meet the Cast of Characters

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 23, 2013
It has been very much a Wes Anderson last couple of months with the release of several video essays on each of his films, a fantastic book "The Wes Anderson Collection," and of course the trailer for the much anticipated The Grand Budapest Hotel. Feeding the anticipation, this video gives us a look at the cast of characters from the upcoming film, which recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.

Best of 2013: Jake & Dinos Chapman "The Sum of All Evil" @ White Cube Gallery

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 23, 2013
Not that we want to deter you from looking at these images, but no picture will do this exhibition justice. I can go on and on about how intriguing the work is, how the Chapman brothers have perhaps made the biggest noise during Basel week in Hong Kong, but even that would not give enough credit to how incredible the diorama pieces of The Sum of All Evil really are.
