Susanna Majuri's Underwater Worlds

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 16, 2013
Photographer Susanna Majuri builds mythical underwater environments and then photographs female models swimming in, above, and through them. "The water is most remarkable," Susanna says. "It carries bodies. Water is color. The shimmer and the deep green. My challenge is to see the reality in a non-traditional light. When I am shooting pictures, I have a premonition that something strange is about to happen."

Humberto Casas Junca's School Desk Drawings

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 16, 2013
Artist Humberto Casas Junca draws on classic school desks, combining his detailed drawings of violent events in Colombia with Norwegian black metal logos. Maybe if our drawings were this good when we doodled and carved our desks in school we wouldn't have spent so many recesses in time out....but maybe not.

Another Look: Paintings by Lu Cong

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 16, 2013
We came across some beautiful works by fine artist Lu Cong this morning, and although the majority of the work focues on the faces of the subject, this one piece of the floating women caught our attention the most. Cong was born in Shanghai in 1978, and he moved to the US when he was 11, and interestingly, graduated from the University of Iowa with degrees in Biology and Art in 2000.

The Work of Athi-Patra Ruga

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 16, 2013
'Athi-Patra Ruga is one of a handful of artists, working in South Africa today, who has adopted the tropes of myth as a contemporary response to the post-apartheid era. Ruga has always worked with creating alternative identities that sublimate marginalized experience into something strangely identifiable.'

Jason Ratliff's Walking Shadow Series

Juxtapoz // Monday, December 16, 2013
In this series entitled Walking Shadow, designer and illustrator Jason Ratliff shows us that even a long, dark shadow can be transformed into something more visually interesting, like these bright patterns of stimulating colors. Ratliff combines traditional, detailed illustrations with abstract, mosaic silhouettes. Elderly folks, musicians, and animals find themselves accompanied by a shadow made of bold, solid blocks of color...

"Smoke till you croak" by Baer

Graffiti // Saturday, December 14, 2013
What’s not to like about Baer’s comic book-style paintings that revolve heavily around death, drugs and illegal activities? Written in the far right corner is “Weed 'em and Reap” and on the left “Bong reaper.” As the saying goes, “Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em!”
