20 Questions with Tara McPherson

Juxtapoz // Monday, 06 Apr 2009

Tara McPherson rocks in more ways than we can count. Tara mixes extreme attention to detail with a sassy attitude for an outcome that is truly unique.

From paintings, to toys, to comics, and more, a look at her artwork is like snagging intimate and thought provoking glimpses of people and creatures of an alternate universe, crossing dimensional planes of time and space to simultaneously comfort and disturb.
We're stoked that Tara sat down and answered our nagging questions for us, because with all her projects going on, she's one busy lady!

Without further ado, read our 20 Questions with Tara McPherson here...

What's the first thing you did when you woke up this morning?

Turned on my music, and TV on the Radio was playing Staring at the Sun, then I looked out the window and was raining. So I shut the curtain…

Something about yourself the average person wouldn't guess?

I do like other music other than metal… Jazz, blues, gangster rap…

If you had one day left on Earth, what’s left to be discovered?

The creatures in the deepest deep of the oceans!

What is your first art-making memory as a kid?

My parents were going to re-wallpaper the kitchen, so they let me draw all over the walls. I think I was 3?

Do you need long periods of time alone, or are you energized by interaction?

Yes and yes. I need both equally, or else I start to get a little crazy. Too many people, or too much alone time can wreak havoc on my emotions. I think I need to be alone more than I need people though.

Is being in the dark with the lights out frightening or comforting?

Depends if I just watched a scary movie or not. I’m still totally afraid of the dark and the things under my bed.

What's the most non-art involved activity you continually find yourself enjoying?

Getting my morning coffee.

Have you been to jail? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yep. A DUI my last year of college in LA. I had a rookie cop arrest me, and he kept apologizing to me. And then I had to make the ‘Dad… I’m in jail’ call.

What kind of car do you drive?

I haven’t had a car in 4 years since I moved to NYC, but the last car I owned I had for 6 years and it was a '68 Chevy Nova.

What's your biggest non-green inspired indulgence?

Making out.

What is the single most important thing you did to breakthrough as a career artist?

Work my ass off.

Best hustle you ever pulled?

I went to the art store to buy some supplies and a couple Series 7 sable brushes. When the guy rung me up it was unexpectedly cheap. I didn’t notice until I walked outside to look at the receipt that he only charged me $3 each for the brushes that are normally like $30 each. So I walked back in and bought about 25 of them. And then I told some friends to go in there that same day and buy some before the store noticed the price was wrong!

Are you ever bored?

Sometimes when I have to wait around for people. I’m pretty impatient… but I’m working on that.

What excites you?

Finishing a piece, seeing bands and artists I love, getting to DJ, traveling to new places and meeting new friends.

2023 will look like . . . ?

If you could have a drink with one artist, living or dead, who would it be?

John Currin.
