From Shepard's artist statement: "The Printed Matters show incorporates every variety of my printed works, including prints on wood, metal, album covers, and fine-art collage papers. Some people say print is on its way out, that it will be wiped out by digital media, but I say you can never replace the provocative, tactile experience of an art print on the street or in a gallery.  Printing still matters."

There you have it.  In his first solo show at his Echo Park Studio No.1 and Subliminal Projects Gallery location, Shepard packed the house.  I will admit I was far too scared to go last night, so I attended the preview on Wednesday.  Working from his collection of uber-iconic and often political images, Shepard shares several pieces in this show.  My fave in recent times has been the album covers (pictured above).  Another is the wave. 

Shepard is focusing on the importance of printed material for this show, and he gives us an excellent survey of the different mediums he works with: wood, metal, album covers, and fine arts collage papers.  If you are on the west coast and didn't get to see his show in NY at Deitch Gallery, then this is your chance.  The pieces aren't as large, but it is another great collection of some very unique one of a kind mixed media paintings.

The party was fun too...Z-Trip on the ol' wheels of steel made the evening a blast, and it was so crowded that I can only imagine the public opening reception was nuts.  If you missed both, you have plenty of time to see the show and probably the room necessary to roam the gallery and see the show.  If you'd like to read Shepard's artist statement in entirety, you can find it here.
