The Art of Mike CEPT Ballard

Current

Tuesday December 28, 2010

We just introduced Mike "CEPT" Ballard of England in our January 2011 issue to our readers, and we wanted to introduce him to our online readers as well. Ballard and some of us here share similar musical tastes (Madlib, Sun Ra, Flying Lotus), and we share similar tastes in liking vintage futurism. Ballard likes to combine a bit of everything in his work: Baroque, Dada, Cubism, Situationism, detournement, and appropriation. More after the jump . . . Purified

Current

Tuesday December 28, 2010

Get ready, as the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is set to open on January 5, 2011 in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province of People's Republic of China. What you see above is a light test prior to the Festival opening. If we can do this with snow, why can't we deal with world peace is what we want to know? Seems like we can do anything as humans. The Hyperrealistic Paintings of Hilo Chen

Current

Tuesday December 28, 2010

It is not a time for summer, nor a visit to the beach here in the USA, but showcasing the hyperrealistic work of Hilo Chen can at least take the East Coast to a warmer place. The subject matter of Chen's work is obviously provocative, and perhaps not for everybody, but the skill in the work is undeniable. More beach paintings after the jump . . . Purified

Gorillaz and Artist Jamie Hewlett Give Away Free Album

Current

Monday December 27, 2010

Put this in the art rock category. Damon Albarn (of Blur origin) has been for so long considered to be the "face" of the animated Gorillaz group, that you forget the entire imagery of the band has been created by the talented Jamie Hewlett. Think about it: your parents probably know the work of Jamie Hewlett now, and chances are, unless they were very cool, they didn't know "Tank Girl." Hewlett and the Gorillaz team cap of a successful touring 2010 with a free album, "The Fall." Information after the jump . . . Purified

American Prison Tattoos by Robert Gumpert

Tattoo

Monday December 27, 2010

This post is two-fold. One, we receive many letters from prisoners who are avid readers of Juxtapoz. And two, we like to showcase someone who documents prison art in a classic portrayal like Robert Gumpert has in this series, American Prison Tattoos. Gumpert explores the meanings behind prisoners’ tattoos in Californian penitentiaries with clean black and white photography. Many photos after the jump . . . Purified

The show, There It Is, features the work of Caldwell, Brett Amory, and Seth Armstrong. Read about Caldwell after the jump . . . Purified

Michel Gondry x Le Petit Gondry for Juxtapoz January Issue 2011

Current

Monday December 27, 2010

Rarely are we able to look into the creative process of one of the leading and experimental mainstream filmmakers like Michel Gondry. We were extremely lucky to have our contributing editor, Joey Garfield, speak with Gondry for an exclusive interview in this month's Juxtapoz. In the spirit of the creatvie energy and "handmade" element to Gondry's films and videos, we had our own creative project with our Gondry lookalike, Le Petit Gondry, as we explored the career of the famed French filmmaker through the eyes of our own little actor. No question Salvador Dali still draws a crowd

Current

Monday December 27, 2010

Sometimes Salvador Dali gets unfairly placed in the "college rock" section here in the USA because he is the common poster found in dorm rooms and collegiate apartments. He can be labeled, even before Warhol and Picasso, "your first fine artist." That said, when you leave that bubble, you start to see why: Dali was a significant artist with wide-spread popularity and interest, so much so that he draws major crowds in an art capital like Milan. More information after the jump . . . Purified
