Once a rumor, now fact: CIA used modern art as propaganda weapon

The CIA are some clever blokes. Apparently, during the 1950s and '60s, the Central Intelligience Agency, normally known for secret flights to secret airports for secret interrogations, used artists such as Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko as weapons for Cold War propaganda. One of our favorite exhibitions of the year was Cosima von Bonin at Kunsthaus Bregenz in Bregenz, Austria this past Fall, titled perfectly, The Fatigue Empire. As Contemporary Art Daily wrote at the time, the Fatigue Empire was "unusually epic density, starting with her large canvas paintings and spanning from textile sculptures and estranged reconstructions to voluminous installations." Patrick Martinez just sent us opening photos, shot by Brandon Shigeta, of the important "Dreams Deferred" show at the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles. We wrote about the show earlier this month, mentioning it showcased, "artists exploring the tensions, repercussions, hopes, and dreams of immigrant communities in the face of new immigration legislation, through a broad spectrum of art including street art, graffiti art, sculptures, painting and multimedia installations."
