This weekend I stopped by the opening reception of Beta Release: Experiments in Video, Sound + Performance at Phantom Galleries in Long Beach. Photos and more after the jump.
We think it is quite well-known that video art is at a good place, and we always enjoy when something gets put onto our desk (or computer screen) that is new and original in our eyes. Paris-based video artist(s) CRCR has expanisve talent at both animation and stop-motion video art with actors, creating some of the most unique video shorts we have seen this year. Graffiti giant, BATES, has a new solo show up at Hanna G in Malmo, Sweden. We go to BATES' blog on 120zProphet all the time because he is really good at keeping it updated. The show itself, with all new works, got a lot of good press from the Malmo press, as well. More after the jump . . .
Volcom took influential Southern California-based conceptual artist John Baldessari’s art into their own hands and made it wearable with a limited run of 500 Baldessari x Volcom tees available now. More after the jump . . .
This week at SXSW, Spike Jonze will screen his short film based off of Arcade Fire's Album of the Year The Suburbs, "Scenes From the Suburbs." The short expands on Jonze's video for the lead track, "The Suburbs," where it follows kids in, you guessed it, the suburbs, as they deal with all things suburbia that the Arcade Fire album covered very well. Counter-culture icon and logo designer for the infamous Grateful Dead "Dancing Bears" and "Steal Your Face" skull, Owsley "Bear" Stanley, has died at the age of 76. Regardless of your opinion about the Grateful Dead, the logos are a testiment to the power of music and art when fused together. More after the jump . . .
We profiled the stuffed animal skin rugs of Agustina Woodgate on the site a few weeks ago, and then someone sent us these sculptures made from human hair bricks, for a series called "I Wanted To Be A Princess." The Argentina-born, Miami-based artist is slowly becoming one of our favorites in ingenuity department. More after the jump . . .
Famed and controversial Chinese artist, Ai WeiWei, will open his “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads” exhibition in NYC at the Pulitzer Fountain on May 2, 2011. Presented by the Chinese contemporary art organization AW Asia, the 12 bronze animal heads are inspired by the fabled fountain-clock of the Yuanming Yuan, an 18th-century imperial retreat just outside Beijing. More looks after the jump . . .
We featured LA-based Mear One back in October 2007, and keep up-to-date with the artist over the years. Mear just finished a 30' x 15' mural on the LA Fonderie rooftop, and Roger L. Griffith caught the whole process. JR had hit the front of the Fonderie late last month, so there has definitely been activity. Watch the video after the jump . . .
Some of the best street art has humor built into it. In the case of French street artist, OaKoAk, they take what the city gives to them and creates a witty street piece. Who hasn't wanted to turn a tile doorstep into a piano, or a sewer cover into a Viking's shield? More after the jump . . .
