Juxtapoz Blog

Los Angeles-born artist Elizabeth McGrath has always had an eye for the strange beauty in the grotesqueries of life; this appreciation is nowhere more evident than in her work. Inspired by the relationship between the natural world and the detritus of consumer culture, she brings forth a new cavalcade of creatures from the darker corners of the streets, the city, the imagination. It is this melancholy interaction between man-made status symbols and suffering specimens of nature that make up her intricate body of work. Today she lives in Downtown LA with her hairless dogs Blue and King Tut, and her Husband Morgan Slade. They play together in the band Miss Derringer.

Hey Guys,

I recently went and checked out a show called "Prison Ink" around the corner from me at Crewest Gallery in Downtown LA. The show was all artwork made my prison inmates and the postcard enticed with the line "Immerse yourself in the fantasy world of an inmates mind." I had to check it out, and I'm glad I did. Unfortunately for you the show comes down on Sunday the 28th -but for those of you who can't make it I've posted some images here for you to check out. Enjoy!

Sorry it has taken me so long to post a blog!! i got an iflip movie camera for my birthday and was totally addicted! my plan was to do frame grabs from the Iflip and little movies, but it took a really long time and i wasnt able to finish much. I do have a few photos here and there- And also wanted to announce that im  a great group show called "the Conquerors"-
featuring the works of Mark Bodnar, Mari Inukai, Bill McRight, and Bonnie Brenda Scott- the show is at Artspace in Raleigh North Carolina (birthplace of one of my favorite authors David Sedaris!) and runs from September 4- October 24th if your out there check it out!!!!  Lia Newman along with others worked really hard at putting this together! thanks Lia!!!

We  flew out to Arizona for the closing party of Morgan's art show at at Perihelion arts

Greg Escalante and Annie A- on the plane ride out

it was super fun- their art walk is the biggest in the country! so needless to say it was packed!- Amy the owner of Perihelion threw us an awesome BBQ the next day where I had BBQ pizza for the first time- we also visited the Mesa Arts Center   what an amazing space!!!! If you are visiting Phoenix its a must stop destination!

i met these crazy people at the airport!

when we got back i was super excited to meet my new intern who was coming all the way from London- Miles Gavin- i was a bit nervous at first because on a whim i randomly agreed to let someone i met on the internet  stay with us for three weeks! But Miles turned out to be a perfect gentleman and a very talented artist . He had some really great ideas, and helped me tremendously!!  We also shared a  liking for macaroni and cheese,  mochi balls and horror movies!!

Behind the scenes at a Morgan Slade Photo shoot-

Morgan's art show at Perihelion Arts in phoenix Arizona comes to a close this weekend. He was showing along side Richard Edson's "Beyond the Valley of the Microbops"  big portraits of tiny things! we weren't able to make it out to the opening because of the tour but were going out there for the closing party.

photo by Richard Edson - i want to kiss him on his nose, so cute!!!
For the show Morgan recruited the very talented and very beautiful ladies of Hairroin Salon to model for him. He was nervous to ask them so i did it for him- and they were like bikinis, mascot heads, were in!!! Hairroin owned by Janine Jarman is my favorite place to get my hair done!!! they are all super cool and don't give me a hard time about changing the color of my hair every time i go in!!!   if your looking for a place that can do anything check them out!!!!  champagne Friday's are always fun! !!!

Tomorrow we're going to be playing for  Shockhound TV in Hot Topic's Headquartes and then off to AZ and then i really need to get some art done or the folks at BSFA are going to kill me!!

Jarred Gold and Joshua Petker Fashion show!

The event took place July 30th at Club Social Hollywood- it was a collaboration between Designer Jared Gold and artist Joshua Petker, two humans i really admire! So i was flattered when Jessicka asked me to help host the event along with a ton of other super cool hosts , DJ's and entertainers (see list at Jareds website ). As a host i was required to hang around and drink Mohito's, I thought that  could handle that! The only sucky thing was that i forgot to bring my camera with a flash so i only got really crappy photos of the event!!! I appologize in advance-
