Gary Taxali is an award-winning illustrator and has exhibited in many galleries and museums throughout North America and Europe including Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York City and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. In 2005, he launched his first vinyl toy, The Toy Monkey, which included a special edition along with a silkscreen print commissioned by The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. This led Gary to create his own toy company, Chump Toys, which recently saw the release of his 'OH NO' and 'OH OH' vinyl figures. Aside from his gallery shows and illustration work, Gary also devotes a portion of his time teaching and lecturing at various arts organizations and schools. Currently, Gary is writing and illustrating his first children's book entitled "This Is Silly" which is being published by Scholastic and slated for a Summer 2010 release. He lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Here is an illustration entitled "Disinclination" that I created for the Gallery section for The Atlantic.  It was a joy making this picture for Jason Treat, the Art Director.  Jason loves illustration and you really see his passion throughout the publication.  In that regard, for me there was total inclination.

I love working with AD Nicholas Blechman at The New York Times Book Review.  Nicholas always gives me assignments that resonate with the way I see things when I draw pictures.  I love that feeling when I think, "You get me!".  It's a mark of a GREAT art director, as we all know.

This Illustration was a for book called "Bright-Sided - How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America" by Barbara Ehrenreich.

A few days ago, my great friend and esteemed illustrator Anita Kunz made a well-written reply on my blog regarding the Google issue.  I thought it was something that needed to be read by all so with Anita's permission, I am re-posting it here along with my comments.  First off, let me make it clear that Anita is one of my favourite people.  She's a great pal to me and I love her dearly.  She has done more to help me than any other illustrator I know (Anita taught me how to register my copyright and because of her, I have benefitted tremendously from that means of image protection).  She has done more than most artists for illustration advocacy and artists' rights and I respect her as an industry leader.  Anita and I hang out and love having lively chats about the state of the industry.  The exchange below is exactly that.  I also think this is a very hot topic and warrants discussion by all.  I'd love to hear what people think and I am sure Anita does too.  Again, this is NOT me versus Anita, it's Anita and I having differing opinions on an issue.  We both have the same goals for the industry.

WARNING:  Any negative comments that make anonymous snipes will not be posted.  It's my blog and that's my rule.

Here is an illustration I completed for the cover of Trinity Magazine.  It's a University of Toronto publication and the feature was on the Arts & Letters Club.  I created this for Dean Mitchell at Fresh Art and Design here in Toronto,  Dean is a wonderful AD whom I've had the pleasure of working with extensively over the years.  The illustration was created traditionally using a Gocco screen printer using 3 screens.
