Paintings by Tom Burckhardt

Tom Burckhardt's paintings on cast plastic supports occupy a delicate place in contemporary painting that is self-aware of the discourse surrounding the long-established medium, with many subtle touches to the surfaces reflecting a sense absurdity which accompanies imagery that balances between abstract and representational. We can see the beautiful contradictions within his painterly choices and his complex relationship to the medium when he comments: "I really love painting, but I also want to make fun of it. I want to have that full range of experience. I don’t want to be a true believer, and wear blinkers about it." Here we sample some of his recent paintings. Read more about Burckhardt and his work here.
