Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction: Lena Revenko

“I don’t know what influenced me more, Russian miniatures, Soviet children’s books, Hebrew manuscripts, Indian paintings, or Japanese prints. They all created a crazy image library in my head.
Since I like to draw on old books, memos, and letters, people often ask me if there is a connection between my drawings and the meaning of the texts. I have a good friend who collects records from all over the world. I once asked him if he wanted me to translate some of the Russian songs he liked. He said that seems unnecessary to him, that although he doesn’t understand the exact meaning of the words, he grasps their essence by listening to the voices and the melody.
It is the same for me with old books and letters; sometimes I understand the text, other times I might not. Regardless, it inspires me, makes me feel something, and that is the most important.” –Lena Revenko
