Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction: Andrew Jeffrey Wright
Wednesday October 14, 2009 |
![]() Andrew Jeffrey Wright has, according to Adam Wallacavage, “been 15 since 1986.” An apt description for an artist who draws fart comics and paints patterned canvases with equally mesmerizing character. Adam Wallacavage: Have you ever had any insecurities? Or were you somehow immune to all forms of bullying in school to the point that you never cared how differently you dressed? I remember going skateboarding with you near Upper Darby High School, only you didn’t bring a skateboard, you brought roller skates and were wearing plaid bell-bottom pants with your hair in cornrows. There were gangs of jocks there and they didn’t bother you. Andrew Jeffrey Wright: I was teased and shouted at and insulted a lot by people in cars and kids at school and wherever, but I wasn’t really concerned with what they thought of me and for the most part I ignored it. I recall once riding my bike and some girl yelled some insult at me and I thought to myself real quick, “I never yell back, I should yell something back,” so I shouted, “Shut up or I’ll come over there and spit in your ear! I immediately felt stupid—not because of what I yelled, I liked what I yelled, it was original and I never heard anyone yell that threat before, so for some reason I liked it. I felt stupid because I don’t like violence, verbal or physical. Your passivity has gained you a great number of friends and followers, as well as some elusive artists with whom you have a knack for collaborating artistically. Have you ever considered using your influence and the trust that people bestowed upon you to become a cult leader? No, but I’m trying to figure out a way to use my influence to get the legal age of consent lowered to 17 and three quarters. It must be weird being a 15 year old in the body of a 37 year old. What do you think of the idea of age? What do you think of the idea of immaturity? Thanks for getting me to think about stuff I don’t concern myself with. I don’t intentionally not think about age-appropriate behavior; it just doesn’t enter my mind. I’m immature to most people, but to an eight year old I’m a grown-up. --Excerpt from Juxtapoz #91; Interview with Andrew Jeffrey Wright with Adam Wallacavage
