Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction: MQ
Tuesday September 01, 2009

The Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction, presented by Upper Playground to benefit Power House Project of Detroit, is moving along at lightening speed. In continued coverage of all the amazing artists participating, today we showcase MQ.

From the streets of New York City, Puerto Rico and California, to the shores of Japan, MQ is seen. If you have been to any of these locations over the past 20 years, you have definitely located an “MQ,” MQ-1,” “MKUE, ”or “MQUE” in bold block letters or a distinct tag around the city. Starting his graffiti career in NYC in the early 1980s, MQ first hit the trains, but as those began to be buffed, he took to the streets. But he didn’t just paint the streets; he completely wrecked havoc throughout NYC. MQ is a prolific and persistent artist, sometimes covering entire city blocks with repetitive, hypnotic “MQ” pieces, or painting an entire dry dock for only a few to see. Today, while residing in California, the ever-elusive MQ is currently working on different aspects of his graffiti art, including metal stickers, poster art, clothing, and gallery shows. As he did over two decades before, MQ is expanding his presence. —Coma DMS
