Cody Hudson, a prolific commercial graphic designer and head of his own design firm, Struggle Inc., is also a talented fine artist in his own right. Cody generously donated an awesome drawing for the Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction, “The Big Payback”.

Elise Hennigan: What did you donate for the Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Auction? Can you put the piece in context for us?

Cody Hudson: It is a drawing from a series of hot air balloon inspired drawings I have been doing for the last few years. The series of drawings originated from the idea of trying to envision vehicles that this imaginary cult I was fascinated with had made to try to get themselves closer to a fulfilled spiritual life. They thought that the higher up they would go, the closer to enlightenment they would be.

Ever thought of abandoning commercial graphic design work to focus on fine art, or do you enjoy working on a combination of the two?

I like working on both too much. Also I think I might go crazy if I had to just paint all day long every day. I like the combo of both as it gives me breaks from each side when needed and helps balance my mental state out a bit.

Do you have an ultimate dream design project that you would kill to work on?

I would like to design the graphics on the side of an airplane or maybe a Neil Young album cover. Although I doubt I would kill someone to get either. I’m not really into the idea of going to prison.

Do you have a ritual that gets you into work mode? i.e. listening to certain music, drinking specific beverages, wearing lucky socks, etc.?

wake up. work. eat. sleep. wake up.

Anything new and exciting coming up for 2009/2010?

Working on a multi city art tour with Sixpack France for next year that has me excited to make a lot of new graphic works. Also, I got married recently which was fun. Other than that 2010 would be great to  catch up on some sleep maybe?
