European graffiti legend Mode 2 (Juxtapoz cover #77) is known for his erotic imagery that teases, shocks, and tempts in more ways than one. Mode 2 has changed the face of street art and graffiti through years of hard work and dedication. His latest show, Reality, Fantasy, and The Web, is now on display at Lazarides Newcastle. Learn more about this bold artist in a revealing interview. [Caution: the following interview contains mature imagery that may not be safe for work or young eyes.]

Chris Osburn: How did you first get involved in graffiti? What drew you to it?

Mode 2: I first took notice of graffiti in the opening title sequence of the American sitcom "Welcome Back Kotter", then after that in the "Buffalo Gals" video, where Dondi was outlining a piece with the track name. I had always liked to draw, and also to write; having done stuff like making tiny little books from cut up school text books, then copying in text from somewhere else with a ballpoint pen, as small as I could. I also liked illuminated letters found in old books from monasteries, as well as the lettering used in 60s and 70s record sleeve graphics, going right back to Alphonse Mucha advertising posters from the late 19th and early 20th century. So, along with the drawing that I was always into, lettering was also definitely present.

When I had finished my O-Level GCSE's in early summer '84, I started hanging out more frequently in Covent Garden, amongst the hip-hop community that was pretty much resident there. I started painting letters on friends' tracksuits, and also got involved with the GLC-funded Alternative Arts office, which handled the buskers around Covent Garden; and through them, we (Scribla and myself) did some graffiti banners for their annual street entertainers festival.

I had been trying to draw graffiti-letters from the year before, but meeting Scribla, who was already painting and was on a one-year probation after getting caught painting under the London Coliseum, I really got into it more seriously.



You’ve been described as one of the most influential graffiti artists. Do you see elements of your style in any up-and-comers?

I don't know if there's anything left of my influence in up-and-comers; having started that long ago, with my influence having been present probably in the generation that precedes today's new crop of writers. Maybe some people are more into a nostalgic or anachronistic style by choice; but what influenced and inspired me, and what influences and inspires them today, have not that much in common anymore.

We didn't have complex computer games back then, only popular culture and comics and commercial graphics of the time to draw inspiration from. On top of this, we only had "Subway Art", "Watching My Name Go By", "The Faith Of Graffiti", and a couple of other books around hip-hop culture. We were the very first generation of European writers, and had to invent and innovate all by ourselves, from what little material we could use as reference.

Since the mid-90s, the amount of graffiti fanzines increased greatly, and then came the websites, and all of this was back by many other evolutions and revolutions in our visual environment, all around society. This is what would naturally be a lot nearer and more convenient as an influence for those who're painting today.


 
How have things changed in the graffiti scene since you started out?  Anything you miss from the “good ole days”?

True innovation and originality is not valued the way it used to be, which means that those responsible for pushing the envelope yet further do not get the credit they deserve, as anything really new that they have brought to the mix is seen as "just another new style that everyone's into right now". Give credit where credit is due, and this will in turn give you a better appraisal of what originality is, give it the value that it deserves, and maybe push more people to try to be original too, thus making way for a much richer and diverse culture than what we have out there.

True, there are some people who still remain at the forefront with new ideas, technique, and direction; but behind them is this massive rumbling behemoth of "also appearing", who are just content with being down, and doing what everybody else is doing; like kicking a football about in the park, or sitting and getting drunk or stoned on the park-bench with some friends.

There are a few who also really take their illegality as an almost spiritual mission, something almost existential that's important to their own sanity, and their sense of worth in society, or outside of it... and yet there are also a large proportion who are just plain adrenaline-addicts, and at any given time on the planet, you can just about hear their cans of paint rattling away, for no more than just some kind of repetitive sport, caring little for any but themselves, or about the cultural origins of what they're actually doing.

Still, I'd rather they were doing this, as otherwise they could be doing something a lot more destructive or self-destructive, to others or to themselves, to the community or to their own families. The more extreme and peripheral margins of hip-hop or graffiti have actually helped in channeling energy which would definitely have been misspent, to the detriment of all of us, had hip-hop itself not existed.
