Emerging Artist: Aica
Wednesday June 11, 2008

Meet Aica. Yep, that’s the whole name she goes by and from the look of her work, the simplicity of it all is quite appropriate. She says, “I'm heavily influenced by anime and manga as part of my daily life from early age. However, unlike other Japanese artists in that their styles tend to be twisted or dark, my paintings are based on really simple and often overlooked moments of life, which is ‘the moment of love.’”

Aica was born in Osaka, Japan, and started her artistic journey at an early age by drawing family portrait narratives on the back of her father's electrical engineering blueprints. After initially studying traditional drawing, she moved into 3D animation, but became disenchanted with the 3D medium as being to too explicit, and ultimately rediscovered the power of simple painting and drawing to expand the viewer's imagination beyond the canvas.

Discussing the subject matter of her painting, Aica says, “These moments could be from someone next to me, or even something without a soul like gems. Even if these memories scar my heart in some way, it comforts me to embrace that scar, and surround it with warm sunlight. Like witnessing a young girl's isolated emotions being released into air, I hope through my work to inspire someone who may hold sadness within to start loving someone or something around them.”

Aica currently lives and works in New York where she paints happily with her muses: twin kittens. See more of this darling’s work at her recently launched website atelieraica.com.
