It’s that time of year again: Art Fair time! “This year's Frieze Art Fair was bigger and bolder than in year's past. Three hours of press pass previewing still wasn't enough to take it all in,” reports Chris Osburn from London.
Chris got to attend the special preview for one of the largest art fair's: Frieze. Frieze Art Fair takes place every October in Regent’s Park, London and showcases new and established artists to an international audience. Some 150 galleries participate, so you know you’re bound to see some great new artwork. This year’s fair runs from October 15th – 18th, 2009. Enjoy an early peek now:
Fun stuff on show from Tokyo's Tomio Koyama Gallery
Dirk Skieber's untitled car crash scenes (represented by Luis Campana galleries in Cologne and Berlin) brought dark humored gravity to the show.
David Zwimmer gallery in New York had this new and killer work by R. Crumb on display.
Portrait of Linda Oxenberg by Andy Warhol (Waddington Galleries, London)
Cutesy and massive mosaics of sweet lil baby tiger cubs, kittens and ducklings by Farhad Moshiri (The Third Line in Dubai and Doha) were a welcome dose of low brow kitsch amid the sea of haughty and high brow artsy fartsy offerings.
"Britney #5" by Phil Collin
As you'd guess, lots of Michael Jackson inspired art found its into Frieze this year: David LaChapelle's "Archangel Michael" with a neato piece of owl-art - "Genie de Bellerive (petit) sur plyone" - by Francois-Xavier Lalanne; Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York.
"Caterina Dancing Naked 1" by Julian Opie; Krabath, Vienna
Rirkrit Tiravanija's untitled work; Gavin Brown's Experience, New York
Lisa Yuskavage's evocatively captivating "Piggyback Ride" (Greengrassi, London) was probably my favourite piece viewed today.
"Moeko 2" by Paul McCarthy; Hauser & Wirth, London and Zurich
"Single II" by Louise Bourgeois; Hauser & Wirth, London and Zurich
More Jacko! Gary Hume's "Michael" (Matthew Marks Gallery, New York)
Kindly, for those unable to afford tix to the actual fair, the folks from Frieze set up a sculpture park outside as freebie for any and all. Here's Erwin Wurm's "Pumpkin" (Galerie Thaddeus Ropac).
