Back Talk with Nathan DeYoung
Tuesday, 08 September 2009

Nathan DeYoung closely observes his subjects to create beautifully intimate representations. In anticipation of his upcoming show at Thinkspace Gallery, “Windows and Mirrors”, we caught up with the California-based artist.

How do you feel right now?

Very, very tired.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

I’m not sure why but I would love to wake up in London and just take in the city.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

Honestly, I would probably work some conventional 9-5 where I didn't have to do too much of anything so I could have the time and energy to try and find or rediscover what ever skill I had lost.

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

I'm more of a hugs not slugs kind of person, but for the sake of the question I would have to go with Ian Francis. That man is FAR too amazing!

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

Sadly, no.

At what point were you particularly happy?

I'm a very happy person in general, but recently I just moved into a new place with a long time friend, and I finally have a studio to myself and a great room mate, so right now I couldn't be happier!

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

Oh, many more than just one. But I would have to say that I regret not being more honest with people when it mattered most.

What trait do your friends have in common?

Very driven and hardworking. Sorry, I know that is two things.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

I would grab the only original piece of art I own. It's a painting titled 'jencon' done by my great friend and mentor Ash Thorp. The painting is so beautiful and well done, it actually was the reason I wanted to learn how to paint. I still can’t believe I own it!

Greatest love of your life?

Art, in all of its glorious forms.

What is your favorite vice?

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

When you blow out the birthday candles, what do you wish for?

Oddly, the wish changes every year. Go figure!

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

Jim from " The Office"

Do you ever lie?

Yes, too often.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

Thats hard to say. I hope so, but if they feel anything or get anything out of it at all, that is a pretty incredible thing.

What virtue can you do without?

Obedience.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

It really depends on who I am speaking with. The more comfortable I feel, the less I notice.

What has been your proudest moment?

When my long time mentor said that he was inspired by one of my paintings.

What would you like to be remembered for?

For working very hard at making my dreams become a reality.

How would you prefer to die?

Happily.
