Back Talk with INSA
Wednesday, 19 August 2009

INSA is a one-man London based army. Always on the move, INSA’s illustrations and graphics seem as well suited for canvas as they do street walls, women’s bodies, or designer shoes. Always willing to push the envelope with provocative imagery, INSA also proves he has a heart and mind that can show up the best of them.

How do you feel right now?

Happy; and slightly apprehensive about answering these questions.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

In the 80s on stage with Prince as Cat on the Sign ‘o’ the times tour.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

I always wanted to be a special effects make up artist but I guess that comes under creative skill- so probably a failed gigolo or petty criminal.

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

I don’t wanna punch anyone! Especially not other artists- there are plenty that I wish would fade away though…

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

No- though if it had been with the girl I fancied at the time it would have been worth a whole R’Kelly album.

At what point were you particularly happy?

Yesterday- sitting in the park after seeing the Jeff Koon’s show at the Serpentine.

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

I have several personal regrets, but a simpler one- I regret all the times I’ve been caught.

What trait do your friends have in common?

A puerile sense of humor.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

Probably the hard drive with all our photos on.

Greatest love of your life?

My girlfriend Ethel who I’ve been with for the last 10 years…

What is your favorite vice?

I hate to sound like a typical English man but beer- I just can’t get enough of it. I just gave up for 6 months in a bid to gain some control but it only made my love stronger.

When you blow out the birthday candles, what do you wish for?

Happiness for me and those around me.

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

David Bowie in the film Labyrinth.

Do you ever lie?

Yes.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

No.

What virtue can you do without?

Frugality.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

No, not really.

What has been your proudest moment?

When I was 11 winning this budget Yorkshire TV kids show called ‘I can do that’ followed instantly by extreme disappointment when I found out my prize was to hang out on the set of Emmerdale Farm.

What would you like to be remembered for?

Something I haven’t achieved yet.

How would you prefer to die?

Very old with my family all around cheering me on in a drug fuelled orgy….
