Back Talk with Gunsho
Saturday, 22 August 2009

James Quigley, aka Gunsho, crafts beastly beings in a fashion that is decidedly lowbrow—influenced by MAD magazine, Marvel Comics, TV cartoons and metal and punk record covers.

He sees the scores of odd creatures he creates today not as being pulled from thin air or simple imagination, but from a continuum of mythology, or of ancient currents that have persisted into modernity. Check out Back Talk with Gunsho here.

How do you feel right now?

Inert.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

The bottom of the ocean and I would swim back up to the top.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

As a reality television star.

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

Bret Michaels- right in the testicles.

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

I can't remember my first kiss.

At what point were you particularly happy?

The Summer of 1986.

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

Selling my comic book collection when I was 18 because I was broke.

They all love horror movies.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

My family photo-album.

Greatest love of your life?

My old home.

What is your favorite vice?

Anger.

When you blow out birthday candles, what do you wish for?

Pyrokinetic powers and I would wield those powers with reckless fiery abandon.

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

Lance Stargrove.

Do you ever lie?

Yes, but very obviously and ineffectively.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

Yes I do. Someone told me my work was "chewy" the other day.

What virtue can you do without?

Sobriety.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

Only when I talk to my mother.

What has been your proudest moment?

I'm working towards that one.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I really don't know yet.

How would you prefer to die?

Wielding a battle axe.
