Back Talk with Esao Andrews
Monday, 05 October 2009

Esao Andrews paints a bleak and mesmerizing surrealist dream world.  He coaxes humanity out of his gothic subjects with gentle brushstrokes and sympathetic treatment. Check out his answers to our Back Talk questions and a preview of works from his upcoming show “Farewell Avery” here.

How do you feel right now?

I feel great.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

I'd wake up in the refurbished witches house in some charming no-name town, let the dog(s) out in the yard and start cooking breakfast with my girlfriend.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

It feels good to help people, so some kind of social/customer service job would be fine.. I think.

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

Thats not nice! And besides, I actually know this person.

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

Ween could probably write a suitable song about it.

At what point were you particularly happy?

I really like taking road trips with friends.

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

I bought a 1996 encyclopedia set in 2001 for $1000.  Ironically, its now stacked vertically to support an extension of my computer table where I place my broadband modem.

What trait do your friends have in common?

Most of my friends that I see regularly have no tattoos.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

My dog Soybean.

Greatest love of your life?

Those feelings come and go. Either way its good for inspiration.

What is your favorite vice?

Booze and jalapeno poppers

When you blow out birthday candles, what do you wish for?

That I'm not going to die this year.

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

I watched Peewee's Great Adventure the other day.  I wish looking for a stolen bike could be that awesome.

Do you ever lie?

No, but I tend to exaggerate, especially with numbers and amounts.  It’s something I'm aware of and it annoys me.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

Yes I think most people do.

What virtue can you do without?

Under certain circumstances, patience is totally lost on me.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

Yes, because I used to not swear at all. I say Fuck all the time now, even in front of my mom.

What has been your proudest moment?

I just sat here thinking forever on this one.  I have no idea.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I really look up to artists that have a diverse output of work.  With that said I hope I can get a chance to be known for more than my surrealist paintings.  For those I have met in person, I hope I'm remembered as a nice fellow.

How would you prefer to die?

Well, i definitely don't want to die and rot alone in my apartment with strangers rummaging through my belongings.
