Back Talk with Damon Soule

DS1
New York City based artist Damon Soule is making his way to California for his first ever solo show in Los Angeles to show off new works, which are more personal. Through the use of geometry, Soule attempts to gain a better understanding of the ethereal.  Not to get overly serious, Soule answered our Back Talk questions with some hilarious and candid responses.

How do you feel right now?

Annoyed. I just want to get to the studio right now but there are electricians in my apartment putting in a new breaker box.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

I have a ton of shit to do so I can’t really go anywhere right now, otherwise I would. But for the sake of hypotheticals lets say The Capital Wasteland. The nerds know what I’m talking about.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

Male prostitute, or is that too creative as well? Maybe a personal chef. Or a personal chef prostitute.

DS2

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

Haha... are you trying to bait me into some kind of beef with people? I really have no reason to get physical with anyone. I like artists usually, even if I don't care for their trite, thoughtless, simple minded, derivative crap they call artwork. That is simply a matter of personal taste. There are definitely some personalities I don't get or that bother me, but I just ignore those people because their bad behavior is just a cry for attention, and I don't give it.

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

Yes, it would be called Saliva On My Chin, and I would have Kanye West produce it.

At what point were you particularly happy?

I would say at some point in my early twenties, but I can't exactly pinpoint the moment.

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

I’ve missed out on a ton of breakup sex, any one of those would suffice.

DS4

What trait do your friends have in common?

All weirdo’s.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

The box with my all my sketchbooks.

Greatest love of your life?

Honestly, myself.

What is your favorite vice?

Video games.

When you blow out the birthday candles, what do you wish for?

I can't remember the last time I’ve had a birthday cake.

DS5

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

Buffalo Bill from silence of the lambs.

Do you ever lie?

All the time; especially to myself.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

Occasionally, not that it matters. If people enjoy looking at it that's enough for me, but even that may be asking for too much.

What virtue can you do without?

Modesty.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

Not fucking really.

DS6

What has been your proudest moment?

Pride is a deadly sin I wallow in. Seriously though, I don't feel pride just anxiety.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I don't really care to be remembered. Everything comes and goes; entropy will eventually wash us all away.

How would you prefer to die?

I haven't given it that much thought but I know when I do die I would prefer to have my body disposed of the Tibetan way: eaten by vultures.

Damon Soule’s solo show, Modus Alone, will open Friday, February 12th, 2010 at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles.
