Back Talk with Caia Koopman
Monday, 07 September 2009

Caia Koopman is a California native whose art has been largely influenced by skateboarding and snowboarding culture.

How do you feel right now?

Like I could use a cup of coffee.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

I’d go to the future and spend the day time traveling or exploring distant planets.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

I’d have to wait tables or something horrid, it’s too late for me to be anything cool like a paleontologist or astronomer.

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

I’m a lover not a fighter. Oh wait, there is that painter of light guy.

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

I was 5 and there is a really cute photo of it but I can’t remember it so I guess not song worthy.

At what point were you particularly happy?

I think every winter that I had a season pass I was pretty happy, maybe even super duper happy.

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

Regrets, yes, I’ve always been good at learning the hard way so I’ve done a ton of stupid stuff.

What trait do your friends have in common?

My friends are all pretty amazing, they all kick ass at something cool.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

My hard drive.

Greatest love of your life?

Snowboarding and painting.

What is your favorite vice?

Watching TV.

When you blow out birthday candles, what do you wish for?

World peace, and the cure for global warming…

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson, love her.

Do you ever lie?

Haha, no.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

Sometimes, but they don’t have to know what I was thinking to enjoy it.

What virtue can you do without?

Obedience.

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

I don’t swear well, it’s sounds awkward coming from me.

What has been your proudest moment?

A sold out show at La Luz de Jesus.

What would you like to be remembered for?

My work.

How would you prefer to die?

Not lingering, vaporized in a plane crash would be okay.

Caia's two person show, “Vain Remains”, opens at Thinkspace Gallery this Friday, September 11th.
