Back Talk: Sarah Folkman
Monday, 28 December 2009 11:27

S2
Sarah Folkman is an artist whose work in Corey Helford’s Multi-Plane group show caught our eye. Known for incorporating animal imagery into her paintings on wooden panel, Sarah took a few moments to answer a set of 20 quick questions for us.

Today, I feel:
Efficient.

If you had three wishes, what would they be?

1. To have a crow as a close personal friend.
2. To be able to travel back in time and fiddle with things
3. I think number 2 would pretty much take care of  number 3.

S3

Do you consider yourself a funny person?
Yes. Especially when I’m alone.

If you had one magic power, what would it be?
Flying! And to be strong enough to carry someone with me.

Something that makes you happy?
Starting a new painting.

Something that makes you mad?

Being in the dead middle of a painting and feeling as if I’ve lost all direction.

S4

What was your favorite subject in elementary school?
Science. Discovering the inner workings of life.

If you feel a creative block, what do you do to jumpstart inspiration?

Go for a walk and examine the world; feed peanuts to crows; eavesdrop on strangers.

When someone is taking a photo, do you smile for the camera or turn your head?

Both.

Are you a social network enthusiast? (eg Do you post photos on Facebook; listen to music on MySpace; post to YouTube, etc?)

I try, but I’m jealous of my time and only get so far.

What is a quality you don’t like about yourself?

The big tarry pits of sadness.

Last good book you read?
I was just looking through an older book, “The Sacred Heart - An Atlas of the Body Seen Through Invasive Surgery” by Max Aguilera-Hellweg. It is beautiful.

S5

Who has had the most impact on your life?
My mother.

Are you spiritual?
In a humanist sort of way.

One word to describe your artwork?

Yes.

What’s missing in your life?
Daily serenity.

Are you a pet person?
I’m an animal person.

The most trouble you’ve ever gotten into:

If you don’t already know, I’m not going to tell you.

Where do you imagine yourself in five years?
I honestly have no idea.
