Back Talk: A Conversation with Eric Joyner

![]() Tomorrow, January 21, Eric Joyner opens It's A Jungle Out There, a new body of work at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. The exhibition will feature 18 pop-surrealism paintings of robots interacting with jungle animals. We sat down with Joyner to discuss inspirations, salads, and robots and donuts. 1. One reason you make art: It's interesting to me and it is a challenge. 2. The last good movie you saw: Robinson Crusoe on Mars & The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. 3. Something you’ve always wanted to do, but have yet to: Go motorcycle riding in a vast wasteland. ![]() 4. Favorite country or city visited: New York, NY 5. A few words that sum up your philosophy on life: Life is important, time is short, do something you like & have some fun. 6. Something you want the world to know about you: I actually like humans and salads more than robots and donuts. 7. Something that annoys or frustrates you about people: When they give in to negative thoughts and actions. ![]() 8. Something that concerns you: Besides how will I die & the debt crisis? 9. Artists you admire: Sylvia Ji, Brandi Milne, Sarah Folkman, Natalia Fabia, Mia, Lola, Joshua Petker, Luke Chueh, Gary Baseman & Buff Monster, to name a few. 10. Favorite quote(s): "Imagination is more important than knowledge." - Einstein ![]() 11. The first record or CD you ever bought? The last album you downloaded? 'Rock and Roll Animal' by Lou Reed. Last CD: Brian Eno, 'Drums Between the Bells'. 12. Something you do when you’re procrastinating? Play Words With Friends & Watch TV. 13. What is your most defining characteristic? I don't really know. I think my head is rather large though...big irises as well, so I'm told. ![]() 14. What is your greatest fear? My greatest fear is fear itself. You can talk yourself into being scared of anything. 15. The moment you realized you were an ‘artist’: That would be the 4th grade. I was doing some paintings at the time, two of which got selected for a show. One was of a California Mission & the other a copy of a Picasso painting. 16. Your greatest quality: Keeping an open mind. 17. Something you wish you could change or alter about yourself: Other than having many physical things corrected, I kind of wish I had more passion about things. ![]() 18. What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken and was it worth it? I climbed down a very treacherous cliff once that scared the heck out of me..I think it was worth it. Another risk would be switching from illustration to Gallery artist. I'm very glad I did it! 19. Something you wish you had known five years ago: I wish I used Microsoft Excel 5 years ago. 20. What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years of your life? Have a T-shirt line, a toy, a show or two in Europe and a house in the country.
