A Chat with Damon Soule

EH: Why are you an artist Damon?
DS: I don't ever remember making the decision to become an artist. As a kid I was always changing my mind about what I wanted to do when I grew up. However one thing remained a constant, I absolutely loved to draw and make things. I guess it just kind of happened naturally and I don't give it too much thought. For better or worse, making art is just the activity I've devoted most of my time to.
The most interesting things I hear are when someone knows exactly what I'm getting at, having never explicitly outlined the premise behind it. It hasn't happened very often but it blows my mind when it does. It's never my intention to try to enlighten someone with my "brilliant" thoughts; I just enjoy making stuff about things that I find interesting.
Being an artist in a recession…good thing?
To be honest I haven't noticed the difference. This isn't my first recession as a full time artist nor do I think it will be the last. Despite many peoples aspirations I don't think this is a line of work that is extremely lucrative. As an artist you tend to have your own personal recessions. Be it money, working habits, love, etc.
I love the camaraderie. Hanging out with like-minded people just having a good time with the process. I learn a lot when working with friends, sharing ideas and techniques.
I try and stay away from talking too much about content. I like to leave a great deal to the viewer. Words tend to get in the way of the visual experience. I know that answer may seem trite but I am a firm believer in leaving some mystery. That being said...
