Walrus TV: Chef Chris Cosentino x Alex Pardee Prepare Pig Head
Tuesday, 06 January 2009

Chef Chris Cosentino invited Alex Pardee (Juxtapoz cover #79) into his kitchen at Incanto to prepare three dishes using ingredients from a pig's head. Yum.

Check out the six-part video series from Walrus TV, as the two make (and devour) fried pig's ears, pig face, and even pig brains. No wonder Alex is such a clever guy; he’s been eating brains this whole time. Or perhaps it helps explain his obsession with zombies.

Enjoy the entire series and don’t forget Alex Pardee's solo show, Letters From Digested Children, opens this Thursday at FIFTY24SF Gallery in San Francisco. Catch our recent studio visit here with Alex and we’ll see ya this Thursday!

Studio Visit with Alex Pardee in Preparation for Letters From Digested Children
Friday, 02 January 2009

Our homeboy Alex Pardee (Juxtapoz cover #79) recently allowed us to come crash his studio and get a sneak peek at his newest work (one of our favorite pieces is shown below) for his upcoming solo show at FIFTY24SF Gallery, affectionately titled Letters From Digested Children, which opens this Thursday, January 8, 2009.

Not only is Alex extremely talented and intelligent, but he’s also super nice and down to earth. Just our kind of artist! We made our way from our hometown of San Francisco over to his studio and Zerofriends art collective compound in Novato, California, which is about 30 minutes north of SF. Upon entering his studio, we were immediately greeted by typical Alex goodness: crazy masks, huge murals, colorful paintings, and oh yeah, the artist himself.

Do join us on a journey through the world and mind of Alex Pardee in our studio visit with him over this way…

Spaulo 23 De Maios New Giant Mural
Wednesday, 31 December 2008

“Since January 2007, São Paulo has enforced a law called Cidade Limpa (‘clear city')” writes our Porto Alegre, Brazil based friend and Juxtapoz contributor, Ana Ferraz. “The objective of this law is to eliminate visual pollution by prohibiting all kinds of outdoor advertising such as billboards, building panels, taxi advertising, and so on. Of course, graffiti and pixação are on that ‘clear’ list too.”

It’s common knowledge that many globally recognized artists such as OSGEMEOS, Nina, Nunca, Vitché and Herbert Baglione call São Paulo, Brazil home so it would seem ironic, disrespectful even, for their city to not only prevent but to remove their public artwork from city walls. However, that’s exactly what the mayor’s office did this past July. Thankfully, due to public and artist outcry, last weekend a massive mural by OSGEMEOS, Nina, Nunca, Vitché and Herbert Baglione was created in place of an old mural that had been painted over in grey paint with city funding.

Hear the entire story and see exclusive photos of the old and new mural as reported by Ana Ferraz.

Review: Glen E. Friedman's Idealist Propaganda
Friday, 19 December 2008

Legendary photographer Glen E. Friedman held the opening reception for his first major retrospective, Idealist Propaganda, at Subliminal Projects Gallery last weekend and from a look at the stunning photos (both in their composition and technical excellence) lining the walls, it's safe to say that this is some propaganda we'll gladly ingest.

Idealist Propaganda features a rare selection of Friedman’s oeuvre, including twenty-five never-before exhibited photographs of his celebrated iconic photos of the pioneering skate, punk and hip-hop subcultures to his equally political and polarized subject matter of the natural world.

Having shot everyone from Jay Adams to Tony Alva; Run DMC to Public Enemy; the Beastie Boys to Minor Threat and Black Flag, Idealist Propaganda proves to be a transcendent exhibition and ultimately Friedman’s most definitive creative and philosophical statement. "I just fucking worked really hard at it," he tells Juxtapoz in a recent interview.
